Who We Are

Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG) is a nationally recognized mentoring organization that offers programming for elementary school girls in Pittsburgh and Boston. With college women as mentors, the program strives to support positive mentoring relations between college women and pre-adolescent girls in underserved local communities. SWSG strives to build a safe, nurturing afterschool program for girls in grades 3-5 where they raise their ambition and learn from positive female role models. As mentors of the Duquesne University Chapter of SWSG, we aim to cultivate the self-confidence and aspirations of the 200+ elementary-aged girls within the Pittsburgh community. During our weekly sessions, the girls read a biography of a female role model - one who is recognizable at either the historical, national, or local level - and then apply one of the role model’s specific, positive attributes to a structured activity. We also have the opportunity to directly discuss the challenges and realities that the girls face every day.

Why are we fundraising?

On April 20th, Duquesne SWSG will be hosting our annual educational field trip to Duquesne’s campus. This is our biggest event each year as we bring the girls we mentor to Duquesne and show them what a college campus is like, expose them to what higher education can offer, and bring all of our strong girls together for a day. As the number of girls we mentor grows, the amount of materials - and therefore funding - subsequently grows. Through funding, we could be assisted in providing lunch and snacks, activity materials, and transportation for girls participating in our field trip.
