Migration Club Food Pantry - Spring 2023

Join the Migration Club in combating food insecurity at Duquesne with our on-campus food pantry. This project strives to provide food for students, faculty, and staff year-round with respect and privacy, as an extension of the Center for Migration, Displacement, and Community Studies in the College of Liberal Arts We recognize food insecurity as an important source of human flows globally. Additionally, we appreciate the importance of food for creating a welcoming and integrated community. We want everyone in the Duquesne community to have reliable access to a sufficient quantity of nutritious food.

To achieve this goal, our pantry will provide healthy food in a welcoming, stigma-free environment. With the support of McAnulty College, our club aims to address and educate our community about food insecurity by increasing awareness and decreasing stigmas surrounding this widespread issue. We will complement other food-based initiatives on campus to best serve our community. In the future, we hope to expand pantry partnerships to promote sustainability and decrease food waste on Duquesne’s campus.

Based on a 2018 research report that studied food insecurity at universities in Southwestern PA, approximately 30% of Duquesne students experienced moderate to high food insecurity, with another 20% at-risk for food insecurity. In that same study, 70% of students surveyed said they would use a food pantry if that option was available to them. (Amanda Brown Cross, “The Campus Cupboard Study: Needs Assessment of Collegiate Food Insecurity in Southwestern Pennsylvania,” Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, 2018.)

We know that for many students, food insecurity has a negative impact on their physical and mental health and creates an obstacle to academic and personal success. We also know that for many of us, this situation worsened by the pandemic. We hope that our pantry will not only provide high-quality food for members of the Duquesne community, but will also help raise awareness and facilitate conversation around this serious issue.

Please consider donating to our project. You can also support us by following us on Instagram @duqmigrationclub, sharing this campaign on social media & with your Duquesne community. In addition to monetary donation, we are also accepting food donations on campus! Check out our Instagram for info on where to donate!
