“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Gandhi

Our trip started with eight complete strangers and ended with countless memories and significant bonds formed because we were all able to lose ourselves (together) in new, unfamiliar communities. We are so fortunate to have been welcomed by strangers who allowed us to experience new places and give ourselves fully to those who asked for our help.

Cross-Cultural Mission Experiences are not about entering a place with the mindset that you are going to solve all the problems or accomplish every single task perfectly. These experiences allow us to become more culturally and socially aware by making ourselves vulnerable to situations that may have been daunting to us at first. CCME through Duquesne is just as much about what you can give as well as what you can take away.

For us, the takeaway is that we need to begin small. No great task is ever accomplished overnight, so we cannot expect to change the world in an instant. We can however, break down barriers, listen to others, give ourselves fully to those around us, and make friends along the way.

It was through our experiences in Dayton, OH that we learned just how much of their lives people are willing to dedicate in order to help those around them. In working with elementary children for two days, we were reminded that kindness is for all ages, honesty is important, and those around us (especially children) will grow and learn by example.

In Baltimore, we learned the definition of fellowship and giving of ourselves in a personal way while inviting those around us to do the same. The world cannot be changed overnight, but if we all took the time to listen to those around us, really hearing their stories and understanding their life’s journey, the kindness may just cause a ripple effect of drastic change.

We want to give the biggest thank you to our donors. Your donations have helped St. Edward’s Parish with maintenance repairs to their bathroom, paint jobs within their church and parish hall, and blinds for their rectory. Additionally, donations helped support the students at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic School.

Thank You!
