Reflections from Our Mission Experience

March 16, 2017

Thank you once again for your support of our crowdfunding campaign, which ended last evening. Our final total was $1,064 raised from 37 donors! In all, our four Spiritan Campus Ministry crowdfunding campaigns to support spring break mission trips raised $5,324 from 135 gifts. We are so grateful!

We hope you will enjoy these student reflections from our trip. Your generosity made this experience possible!

Duquesne University Student Natalia Wohar’s Reflection:

I am so grateful that, along with 11 other students, I was part of the tradition of going to Immokalee, FL this year, Duquesne's 29th time. My trip-mates were amazing. I hadn’t realized there were that many awesome people at Duquesne who I hadn’t met yet! Together we worked with organizations that serve the poor and the migrant farmworkers of Immokalee: Habitat for Humanity, Guadalupe Social Services, RCMA, Immokalee Family Housing, and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). It was a busy week! We were truly welcomed and immersed into the beautiful Spanish culture of the town. My experiences showed me the difference between charity and justice and challenged me to be a more conscientious citizen. I received many blessings from the Immokalee community and, thanks to your donations, was able to offer them a gift in return.

Duquesne University Student Molly Grady’s Reflection:

By being given the opportunity to go to Immokalee, FL, we were able to learn, participate, and serve the community and truly exemplify Duquesne University's mission statement: serve God by serving others. We were involved in various organizations, such as the CIW, Habitat for Humanity, and Guadeloupe Social Services, that allowed us to engage with the community while performing tasks that are essential to their daily lives. Whether it was attempting to speak and learn their language, a simple wave, a laugh or a constant smile, the Immokalee community could not have been more humble, gracious, and appreciative of our presence. Hearing their stories and struggles made us all more aware of how thankful we need to be of what we have and how important it is to always take the time to give back to society throughout life.
