Description
Who we are:
The Speech & Debate Team helps students develop their public speaking skills, rhetorical literacy, argumentation, and confidence to refine them as future professionals and good citizens. The team relies on a sense of community to foster skills that are transferable to the students’ futures.
Why we're fundraising:
We are raising funds to facilitate our participation in tournaments throughout the year. It is important to pursue competitive opportunities since they allow us to sharpen learned skills and concepts. At tournaments, we meet a wide range of new people with different speaking styles and competitive methods. Funds go towards travel, housing, registration costs, and food. Every year, our season closes with the Pi Kappa Delta national tournament, allowing us to compete against hundreds of other students from across the country! Some of our team members have taken home national rankings.
Our Speech & Debate Team emphasizes the democratic nature of public speaking, where concerned citizens should learn how to discuss issues or differences in an approachable manner. In other words, one does not need to be an expert to engage with political or ethical conversations in the broader culture. In this way, we serve God by serving students who can use their skills in life to better the world.
Students improve their academic, extracurricular, and social experiences at Duquesne through Speech & Debate. We learn to analyze the logic behind arguments and learn about current events, improving academic success in students’ courses. We build our public speaking abilities and develop clarity when communicating with other people, facilitating extracurricular fulfillment and helping students with other club engagements. We contribute to a robust social life through friendship and community, offering a well-rounded student life.
