Duquesne Club ACHA Hockey Team Spring 2025

We are a hockey club that gives students at Duquesne the opportunity to play hockey at the collegiate level despite not having a varsity program at the University.  We play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) at the Division 1 level, which is an extremely competitive league that has over 80 teams spanning nationwide. It is the highest level of “non-varsity” college hockey in the country, and we regularly recruit against NCAA programs for players.

This club gives students a chance to play hockey and to continue their athletic careers after high school, juniors and youth hockey are done, all at a world class university. Currently, we have over 60 student athletes between our two teams that compete at the ACHA Division 1 and ACHA Division 3 levels.  We have brought in students from around the world, including recently from Austria, Canada, Israel, California, Colorado, and more. Our program also gives students, both players and managers, the chance to gain real world experience working in the sports industry. Through opportunities such as running our social media pages, managing our graphic design, marketing, broadcast and other coverage of the teams, coordinating travel, overseeing our budget and more, students have the ability to get actual experience in these positions as undergraduates. Many of our players and mangers have gone on to internships and jobs with professional sports teams in Pittsburgh and around the country, including with the Penguins, Pirates, Steelers, Riverhounds, Wild Things, Washington Capitals and more.

For everyone in the program, Duquesne Hockey has given us the opportunity to experience what high level college hockey is like, and to meet our best friends at Duquesne. We have also spent the last few years making games more available to students, creating partnerships with other organizations on campus, scheduling event games and giveaways, and organizing shuttles to get students out for marquee matchups such as the City Game on Ice against local rival University of Pittsburgh. This program means so much to our players and coaches, and has not only given us a strong basis for our experience at Duquesne, but it has helped us branch out even further, both personally and professionally.

Why we need your help!

We have plans and are working on a final design to renovate our locker room for the 2025-26 season. This is a project that will likely cost upwards of $20,000, all of which will come from either fundraising or player dues.

Currently, our locker room does not have enough room to fit all our players comfortably, and through the planned renovations and upgrades, that would change. By getting new stalls and lockers, we can greatly improve our space, making all our time spent at the rink, and as a team, much more comfortable. A more professional and upgraded locker room will also go a long way for recruitment. This will help us bring in more and better players from around the world and gain new students for the university. Additionally, we want to add quality logos, signage and other pieces to personalize the room and honor the history of a program that goes back more than 60 years!

Finally, as a mostly player funded, student organization, all the money we are able to raise helps us to limit the cost to our players, while providing a better experience for them, including things like playing a competitive schedule and traveling around the country to face top programs. Last year, we were given the opportunity to go to St. Louis to compete in the ACHA D1 Showcase where we played the University of Alabama, University of Oregon, and Colorado State University.  We also were able to travel to the University of Rhode Island to take on a Top 25 ranked school.  As we are a club team, donations are what makes our team possible to thrive, as the trips and experiences we offer to students are expensive. Hopefully with the help of generous donors, we can lay the foundation to bring home our first CHMA (College Hockey Mid America) championship since 2009 next year!
