Who are we?
The Duquesne Debating Society is an educational and competitive Speech and Debate team within the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies, helping teach students the art of public speaking and argumentation.
Duquesne is currently a member of the Collegiate Forensics Association (CFA), an organization that hosts a number of NPDA debate tournaments in a 2 vs. 2 format, as well as a variety of speech events. The team has also attended the Pennsylvania Forensics Association State tournament last year, as well as the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament.
Beyond competing, we host a variety of outreach events to involve the Duquesne community and the greater Pittsburgh area. In previous semesters, we have collaborated with the International Relations club, the Honors College, other universities in the Pittsburgh area, and global organizations like iDebate Rwanda.
The Duquesne Debating Society is open to students of all majors and debate experience. We practice at least three times a week, and debate about both fun and serious topics. In addition to having fun at practice, our students do well in competitions. Last year at nationals, a few of our students came home with national championships and recognition. The team hosted its most recent tournament on Duquesne’s campus and won the first overall sweepstakes!
We travel all across the country for tournaments, but this year we are planning to go to tournaments in:
Why we need your help
Your donations go a long way. They would cover everything from registration fees for tournaments to meals and housing for students when we travel. Last year, our team attended nationals in Arizona, but not every member was able to attend. This year, we want to make sure that all of our students have the opportunity to compete in as many tournaments as possible.
