Kappa Epsilon is a professional fraternity with the purpose of uniting pharmacy students, faculty, and alumni. The fraternity emphasizes service, leadership, and scholarship within the field of pharmacy. The Alpha Phi chapter, located at Duquesne University, was founded in October 1999 and continues to fulfill our purpose while also supporting our national philanthropies of breast and ovarian cancer.
Kappa Epsilon is a great opportunity available to all Duquesne School of Pharmacy students because it provides many occasions for professional development, networking, and community service. Besides helpful guidance from our faculty advisors, Dr. Witt-Enderby and Dr. Lohr, Kappa Epsilon is almost entirely student run. We offer many Executive Council and Committee Chair positions to our members that allows them to develop leadership skills and provides them with valuable experiences to add to their resume. Kappa Epsilon allows pharmacy students to connect with each other through social events to create treasurable and lifelong friendships. As a national professional fraternity, there are 43 active collegiate chapters and 10 alumni chapters spread across the country. Because of the widespread nature of our organization, members have the opportunity to make a connection with alumni throughout the field that allows them to get ahead of their competitors. Members are able to grow personally by participating in many different service and community outreach programs such as:
● Card drives for organizations like Girls Love Mail and Amy’s Rays of Sunshine
● Attending the Pittsburgh Recovery Walk
● Holding a table at the Annual Health and Wellness Fair to educate the public on breast and ovarian cancer
awareness
● Volunteering to help administer vaccines for the School of Pharmacy
● Hosting Tea with KE to show our appreciation to the School of Pharmacy faculty
● Holding bake sales and other fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for our philanthropies One of the biggest fundraising events that we hold each year is the Women’s Health Luncheon.
The event was started by our chapter’s former member, Katie Ansel, who was very passionate about our philanthropies. Unfortunately, Katie Ansel herself passed away from breast cancer after graduation. We continue to hold this event, open to the public, in her honor where women speakers are invited to share their survival stories. This past year, we raised about $1,600 from ticket sales and other fundraisers to donate to the local Hair Peace Charity and the Great Lakes Regional Branch of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.
What your donation can help cover
Every two years, the Kappa Epsilon Professional Fraternity hosts a national convention that allows all chapters to come together to share ideas to improve our chapter. This year, the 55th National Convention will be held in Lexington, Kentucky from May 29-31 2025. Each chapter is required to send at least two members to the event; however, we would like to have the opportunity to send as many members who would like to attend. Those who attend will:
● Network with other pharmacy students and professionals across the country
● Attend presentations from leading pharmacy professionals
● Attend career navigation seminars and breakout sessions
● Help us build a new foundation for strengthening our chapter as we strive to continue to further our career and engage in community service
Donations raised will help to cover registration fees, transportation, and hotel costs for the convention.
