Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy - Duquesne Chapter is an organization that prepares and exposes student pharmacists to go into the field of managed care pharmacy. AMCP defines this field of pharmacy as applying scientific evidence to support the proper use of medications to enhance patient and population health outcomes while optimizing the use of limited healthcare resources. By covering so many aspects of pharmacy, this field allows pharmacists to apply their clinical knowledge to advocate for their patients to ensure they are receiving the best medications to support their outcomes while maximizing their therapy with the resources available.
Here at Duquesne, AMCP chapter students are supported by having early exposure to this field and getting involved in programs to further enhance their education to support finding a career in the field. AMCP nationally offers annual conferences to student pharmacists to meet, network, and advocate for the profession. This offers an opportunity for student pharmacists to professionally develop and become more knowledgeable in this field. We also participate in the National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy & Therapeutics Contest every year. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience what being a managed care pharmacist entail. We are given a newly FDA approved drug and are to determine whether or not it should be put on an insurance company’s formulary. We do extensive research to develop a drug monograph and presentation to support our decision.
Why we need your help!
By donating to AMCP, more student pharmacists would be able to attend conferences to learn more about the profession, more students would be able to compete nationally, and gain experience applying their clinical skills in this field. The chapter would be able to expand and support more members school wide with national involvement.
