Sigma Tau Delta

Who we are

Sigma Tau Delta is the international collegiate honors society for students of English and those who have a deep interest in the study of language and literature. Duquesne University’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, Pi Delta, not only confers distinction and recognition on those students who have excelled in the discipline, but it also fosters a community of scholars, readers, learners, and artists who are committed to using their knowledge, skills, and talent to serve and empower the many communities to which they belong.

For the 2023-2024 academic year at Duquesne, Sigma Tau Delta will resume its service projects. In the fall semester, we have our pen-pal project with Pittsburgh Public Schools high school seniors who are international and/or English-language learners. Chapter members exchange letters with these high school students that are hand-written and sent via regular “snail mail.” In the spring semester 2024 we will continue our regular spring partnership with Duquesne’s ESL/ELL program to host "conversation hour" for international and/or English-language learners and international students on campus. 

The impact of your gift

Your generosity to our crowdfunding campaign will enable Sigma Tau Delta members to offset a number of costs that they will have this academic year. There are two events in particular that will benefit from your gifts.

• Sending members from our Pi Delta chapter to the 2024 Sigma Tau Delta International Convention in St. Louis, MO (Hilton Ballpark Denver Downtown) from 3 April to 6 April 2024. 2024 is a special year because it is Sigma Tau Delta’s Centennial. For this reason, the convention will attract the best scholars, writers, and speakers in the discipline of English/literary studies. Our chapter members will present their best scholarly writing and their creative works–fiction and poetry. We hope to repeat the success of our 2022 delegation, one of whom won best scholarly paper in her category. The 2022 delegation’s success was made possible by the Duquesne community’s generosity and enthusiasm. 
• April 2024 Undergraduate Showcase Panel - an annual panel in which Pi Delta chapter members present their work before our departmental and the wider university community. This panel includes a critical paper, poetry, and fiction.
