Mary Pappert School of Music Harpsichord Campaign

What is a harpsichord?

A harpsichord is a keyboard instrument in which the strings are plucked by plectra mounted on a jack. Unlike the piano – which developed in the late 18th and 19th centuries – the harpsichord’s sound is ideally suited for music from the Baroque period (1600 – 1750). It is the correct instrument for early classical music.

Why are we crowdfunding?

In May 2022, the Mary Pappert School of Music will have an unusual opportunity to purchase a beautiful Italian style harpsichord at an excellent price. Having a historically accurate harpsichord at Duquesne University would be a major addition to our already fantastic collection of keyboard instruments. The harpsichord would be used by our early music ensemble (The Dukes Music) and would find a home in larger ensembles such as the Duquesne Chamber Orchestra (DCO) when they perform early music. Because the harpsichord is a solo instrument as well as the core of any small ensemble, our keyboard students would also use it in their recitals.

Please donate today!

In the confusing and often challenging times we find ourselves in, one way to move forward is to connect to our shared musical past. A harpsichord will bring more historical awareness to our students and audiences, as we explore music from centuries ago while forging ahead to create new arrangements, ensembles and creative programs.

Please donate today to help us purchase a harpsichord for Duquesne University students!
