Who was David Donald and what will donations support?
David Donald was many things to many different people. He was a son, a husband, a father, and a brother. To his professional colleagues and patients he was a caring and gifted speech-language pathologist. To us at Duquesne University David was a caring and committed student, a student who made his classmates better, a student who made his classmates laugh, and, a student who made his faculty and the Department better. In 2005 David earned his Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Duquesne University. After a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis, David passed away on January 25, 2020.
In 2005 the SLP Department inaugurated a new student award. The Heart, Mind, and Spirit Award was designed to recognize the student, identified by their peers, as someone who has completed the requirements of academic and clinical education with diligence, commitment and in a heartening way. The recipient is someone who through their dedication, pleasant disposition, and steadfast motivation has inspired the whole class. Students nominate each other for this award and it is granted based on the quality of the descriptions about how this person impacted the entire class. David was the 1st recipient of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology Heart, Mind, and Spirit Award. Following are a few of the many nominating comments written by David’s classmates:
In memory of David and to honor his clear embodiment of the tenants of the award the Department has renamed it as the David B. Donald Heart, Mind, and Spirit Award.
At the instigation of David’s 2005 classmates, a fund has been created in his memory. The fund will be used to support students in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Duquesne University. As a first priority, the fund will be used to provide a monetary recognition to future recipients of the David B. Donald Heart, Mind, and Spirit Award.
We are seeking donations that will allow this Fund to support Speech-Language Pathology students at Duquesne University. We hope this fund will help support current and future SLP students in many ways. Donate now, your donation will make a difference in the lives of many students and the clients they will serve throughout their careers.
On behalf of the Duquesne University Speech-Langugage Pathology Department, thank you for your consideration and support.
Mikael D.Z. Kimelman, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, F-ASHA - Chair, Department of Speech-Language Pathology
