Help Send Duquesne University Student Veterans to the Student Veterans of America National Conference

Every year, Student Veterans of America hosts a National Conference which is the largest annual gathering of student veterans, advocates, thought-leaders, stakeholders, and supporters in higher education in the world. NatCon 2020 will be held January 3-5 in Los Angeles, CA.

Many of our student veterans are attending school on the Post 9/11 GI Bill or Vocational Rehabilitation through the Veterans Administration and aren’t able to work while attending classes at Duquesne. Money’s tight, especially around the holidays to take a trip anywhere.

Why We Want to Attend the Conference

Not only will what we learn at the Conference benefit us, but we can also bring that knowledge back to Duquesne's campus to share with our fellow Student Veterans. At the Conference we will:

  • Learn about new programs and best practices as well as network with other veterans
  • Meet employers who are seeking to hire talented Student Veterans to be their future leaders after we graduate from Duquesne
  • Advance our knowledge and understanding of a wide range of topics relating to veterans in higher education
  • Explore how to strengthen ties between the veteran and higher education communities
  • Meet fellow student veterans and veteran alumni
  • Leave the conference feeling inspired, empowered, motivated, and ready to change the world

We’d love to send a team of four representatives of the Duquesne University Student Veterans Association this year. Though the SVA has hosted the Conference for 15 years, last year was the first time Duquesne students were able to attend, and you made that possible!

Another thing that was made possible through the support of last year’s crowdfunding campaign was the creation of our quiet study space in the Veteran’s Lounge area.  We now have two private study cubicles, a white noise machine, a comfortable chair, and soundproof materials to help our Veterans succeed in their endeavors.

All of the student leaders that attended last year learned not only how to be better leaders but how to adjust to life after the military to be of better service to our brothers and sisters coming home after us.  We not only grew closer as an organization; we grew our network with working with other local chapter leadership.

"It’s been really exciting to be a part of the Office of Military and Veteran Students working as a work study student this past two years.  Last summer, we moved our location to a bigger space in Libermann Hall and a major passion of mine has been trying to create a better environment for students transitioning from the service through Duquesne.  This conference really excites me because it addresses some of the major issues affecting my generation of Veterans and will teach us some new ideas and best practices for improving what we are already doing to make Duquesne University really second to none in the area." -- Joshua Furlong, Student Veteran

"NatCon last year was an amazing experience. Not only were we able to bring back and implement some great concepts for our veteran space here at Duquesne, but I personally had the opportunity to meet and intern with the Human Engineering Research Laboratories, an amazing research lab that's right here in Pittsburgh. I'm excited to see what this year will bring!" -- Sara Mancilla, Student Veteran

"As a new student to Duquense University, the decision to join the student Veterans Association was just automatic for me. The opportunity to attend a national convention, to learn and network with other veterans across the country will not only benefit myself, but I will be able to share this information, and hopefully get others to attend future events. As veterans, and non-traditional students, we face hurdles traditional students so not, but we want to contribute as much as can. These conventions allow us to network within our small community, just as any fraternity or sorority would network in alumni events. It is my goal to use this information to leave behind a path for others to follow and succeed." -- Robert Larkin, Student Veteran
