After School Program for Refugee High School Students

Who are we?

We are McAnulty College of Liberal Arts students in Dr. Jennie Schulze's "Politics of Immigration" class, which explores the challenges of immigrant and refugee incorporation in an increasingly transnational world. As part of this course, we widen our understanding of this topic through community engaged learning activities with Pittsburgh partner institutions.

What is our goal?

To help us directly engage, learn from, and address the unique challenges facing refugee families in the Greater Pittsburgh area, along with our community partners, we are:

  • Participating in an after school mentoring program that aims to close the education gap and to raise educational and career awareness among high school refugee students. The program, which is housed on Duquesne University’s campus for the first time this spring, allows students to take advantage of the resources of that Duquesne has to offer, and encourages social integration through mentorship with near peers.
  • This is the newest evolution of the after-school program, which was begun last year with the help of Duquesne volunteers, and has been featured on  NPR, the City Paper, the Jewish Chronicle, and Next Pittsburgh.
  • We are hoping to raise money to support safe transportation for students to and from Duquesne’s campus, field trips around Pittsburgh to enhance student learning outcomes, and nutritional snacks at the program.

Our Partners?

  • Jewish Family & Community Services is a team of talented and dedicated professionals that have been committed to positively benefiting the Pittsburgh community for the past 80 years. Their Refugee & Immigrant Services help refugees find housing, obtain jobs, enroll their children into school, and help them gain access to government programs. Their efforts, along with support of over 100 volunteers, allow refugees to develop a foundation for building a new life in America and assists them in navigating a new culture
  • The Alliance for Refugee Youth Support and Education (ARYSE) supports immigrant and refugee youth in becoming prepared, engaged, and confident members of American society. Through individualized mentoring, after-school programming, and advocacy training, ARYSE helps refugee and immigrant youth take their place as leaders within their community and our world.

Why are We Crowdfunding?

We are crowdfunding to cover the costs of transportation, field trips, and nutritional snacks for the after school program. One of the largest hurdles for ensuring consistent participation of refugee high school students in the after school program is in providing safe transportation to and from Duquesne’s campus. The students need to get from their high school by public transportation, and then home again after the program. Your donations will allow us to provide bus and metro passes for the students so that they can afford to participate in the program. We would also like to organize field trips related to the career interests of our students, and their educational goals. Your donations will allow us to facilitate transportation, as well as costs of admission at these various venues. Finally, your contributions will enable us to provide a nutritious snack for students during the program. It is important that we are able to feed these students, as the program runs from 3-6PM, with many students not arriving home on public transportation until after 7PM. Our class understands the positive implications we can create in the Pittsburgh community when the word spreads about this program’s success, and we hope you will help us spread the word.

Why Should You Want to Help Us Reach Our Goal?

If we reach our goal we will:

  • Help refugee youth recognize and attain their educational and career goals.
  • Raise awareness about refugees in our community.
  • Integrate refugee families into the Pittsburgh community.

Please Give Now and Help Spread the Word!

We ask that you please donate today to help the collaboration between Duquesne University students, community non-profits, and the refugee community. Any donation will help in our effort to make Pittsburgh feel like home for refugee families. You can also help by spreading the word about this campaign to others via social media, e-mail, and text. Make sure to include the hashtag #POIduq! Thank you!
