Student Occupational Therapy Association

What is SOTA?

The Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) is an on-campus organization that consists of students majoring in Occupational Therapy. We provide volunteer opportunities, host guest lecturers from the profession, and generally provide opportunities for professional development to our students. One of those opportunities is to attend the annual AOTA conference in New Orleans, Louisiana this coming April. Of the approximately 90 members of SOTA, 20 members will be attending this conference.

What is AOTA?

The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) is a national organization that occupational therapists and occupational therapy students can choose to be a part of. This organization provides many professional development opportunities to its members, such as continuing education credits and webinars, in addition to advocating for occupational therapists’ interests in state and federal government. The annual conference is held to allow professionals and students to share their research, network with one another, and learn more about this diverse profession. This year’s conference is being held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Below are the titles of the research that will be presented by the members of Duquesne's SOTA:

  • Use of a Person-Centered Planning Approach to Encourage Vocational Goal Setting Among Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities presented by: Dr. Meghan Blaskowitz, Amy Castagnino, Abbey Gore, Lindsay Layer, Katrina McNally and Sarah Scalero

  • Exploring the Use of Microsoft Bands to Measure Task-Repetitive Practice presented by: Dr. Elena Donoso Brown, Taylor McElroy, MacKenzie Gough, Fiona Kessler, and Jenna Gallipoli

  • Tumble Tots: Outcomes of a Gymnastics Program for Children with Disabilities presented by: Dr. Cayla Leichtenberger

  • Uncovering Silent Voices: African Indigenous Practitioners’ Priorities for Culturally Responsive Global Partnerships presented by Dr. Anne Marie Hansen and Katie Gammer

Why are we Crowdfunding?

We are crowdfunding because not every student who wants to go to the AOTA conference would be able to attend without financial assistance. We want to provide the opportunity to our students to have this great experience. We appreciate any amount that you can donate! It will allow our students to have a wonderful professional opportunity.

Students attending AOTA will have the opportunity to:

  • Attend or present poster sessions

  • Network with Occupational Therapists across the United States

  • Attend lectures and hear from keynote speakers

  • Travel other Duquesne students and faculty members

  • Be able to represent DU OT department

Please Give Now and Help Spread the Word!

Please consider making a donation today to help provide Duquesne SOTA the opportunity to send students to AOTA for this incredible experience. Even gifts of $10 can help make a difference. You can also help by spreading the word of this campaign to other who may be interested via social media, email and text. Here is the link to share: www.spirit.duq.edu/sota.
