What is :lexicon?
Created to showcase the creative works of students, faculty, and alumni, :lexicon is Duquesne University’s journal of arts and literature. Since 2005, this student-run publication has been home to the poetry, prose, and visual art of the Duquesne Community. :lexicon works to celebrate the creative presence on campus through hosting open mic nights, book related events, and the bi-annual publication of the journal.
What is the Duquesne Summer Creative Writing Camp for High School Students?
The Duquesne Summer Creative Writing Camp is a one-week intensive creative writing camp that offers high-school writers the opportunity to hone their understanding of fiction and/or poetry. The camp is directed by John Fried, an associate professor in the English Department and :lexicon’s faculty advisor. Each Summer, John recruits two established authors to guide the campers through exercises, discussions, and workshops, while providing personal feedback on their individual work. At the end of the week, the students design and produce a small journal of the week's work. The journal is released at a public reading for friends and family on the last day of camp.

Why do they need donations?
The camp receives some funding from the department, however the majority of the costs are covered by the students’ tuition. Although the cost of attending can be up to $475, the camp does not currently make a profit. Because of this, there is no room in the budget to provide financial aid, and several interested and talented writers have found themselves unable to attend in recent years. Costs of the camp include writing materials for each camper, lunches, and the production of the journal. By off-setting some of the costs associated with the camp, we hope to enhance the experience for the campers, and also offer 2-3 scholarships to promising students who inquire about financial aid.
Why is :lexicon crowdfunding?
Our editors feel passionately about programs that foster writing and involvement in the creative arts. We also believe that as graduating seniors and recipients of the Outstanding Student Organization of the Year Award, it is important to give back to Duquesne’s campus community in any way that we can. We hope to use this opportunity to ensure both a successful and accessible program is available for Duquesne’s next generation of writers!
