Mission Trip: Arlington/Baltimore '18

Who Are We?

We are a unique group of 11 Duquesne students who share a common desire to grow through following the University’s mission in service and cultural engagement. We are excited to be a part of one of Spiritan Campus Ministry’s Cross Cultural Mission Experiences, where we will be traveling to Baltimore and Arlington over spring break. Like the students who have traveled here for 4 years before us, we too will immerse ourselves into areas of poverty and faith, while working as allies with community members to understand community hardships and participate in acts of service.

When & Where Are We Going?

On March 4, 2018, our bags will all be packed and we leave the Bluff to start our journey! This 8-day long trip begins in Baltimore, Maryland and also includes a visit to Arlington, Virginia.

In West Baltimore, the majority of our trip will be spent at St. Edwards parish. The parish house is in need of some refurbishing, so we will be spending time painting and cleaning, working to best serve their particular needs. Despite the difficulties and hardships of poverty, this community has an overwhelmingly welcoming faith base. We will meet many of the parish members and have the opportunity to learn from and grow in their faith and cultural experiences.

In Arlington, we will visit Our Lady Queen of Peace, a historically African American Parish. This parish has a variety of outreach ministries, focusing in areas of social justice. Here, we meet with a few of these groups to learn about the importance of active ministry in a diverse community.  We will then serve in the parish food bank, having the opportunity to actively participate in ministry work.

Why Are We Participating in a CCME?

Through visiting two very different and unique urban parish communities, this CCME will provide students with the opportunity to grow in cultural awareness and further understand the incredible power of putting faith into action. By learning and discussing issues such as poverty, homelessness, and food access, students begin to understand another side to Spiritan work and how they can engage in walking with those on the margins here at home.

Please Donate Today & Spread the Word!

Much of the funds raised through this Crowfunding campaign will be used to restore plumbing to a second bathroom in Baltimore’s St. Edwards parish house.  Additionally, funds will be used to purchase any painting and cleaning supplies needed in the maintenance of the parish house during the trip.  Finally, after learning about the various ministries offered by Arlington’s Our Lady Queen of Peace parish, students will collectively select one or two ministries in the parish to make a donation in support of. Such ministries include: the OLQP Food Bank, Gabriel Ministry for expectant mothers, and the parish’s Sister School in Haiti.

We ask that you consider making a donation today to support of our campaign. Any and all donations make a huge impact! Additionally, please help us spread the word by sharing the link to this site through social media.
