We are a group of students from Duquesne University, continuing the tradition of service to communities across the world. Our Cross Cultural Mission Experience members honor our university’s tradition of service to marginalized communities. Through the CCME, students immerse themselves into a world of poverty and faith, working as allies with the community members and understanding their hardships.
Our Urban Plunge Cross-Cultural Mission Experience will take place in Baltimore, Maryland and Arlington, Virginia from March 4-12.
In these cities our goal is to meet new people, experience different cultures, and try to understand the situations of the communities we encounter.
This trip allows us to experience Spiritan work in two drastically different locations
In West Baltimore, we will be engaging in manual labor to help St. Edwards restore their deteriorating parish center. St. Edwards is a parish with an aging congregation and little funds to assist with extra projects. Here, we will learn about challenges faced by inner city parishes and how regardless of resources, a rich faith community can be formed.
In Arlington, Our Lady of Queen of Peace is a historically African-American Parish. This parish has an active congregation and access to many funds to assist in their social justice ministries. Here, we will learn how to appreciate and begin to incorporate social justice work into our lives.
This CCME allows students to engage in the inner city ministries of Spiritans in the United States. By learning and discussing issues such as poverty, homelessness, and food access, students begin to understand another side to Spiritan work and how they can engage in walking with those on the margins here at home.
Students will also learn about the rich history of community-based social change.
