Senior Class Giving "Pass the Hat" 2016

2016 SENIOR GIFT “PASS THE HAT” CAMPAIGN

WHAT IS THE SENIOR GIFT COMMITTEE?

The Senior Gift Committee promotes a philanthropic spirit among the graduating class by providing educational, engaging initiatives and events focused on the immediate impact and advancement of student contributions to the University. Through this collective effort, senior students gain an opportunity to leave their legacy at Duquesne University and take their first step toward becoming proud alumni.

WHY MAKE A GIFT?

You have the chance to make a massive impact in your final months on our Bluff, without making an overwhelming sacrifice.  Think about it: $20.16 = one night out in Southside. If every senior gave $20.16 to the campaign, the Class of 2016 could present a gift of $30,000 to the University!

THE IDEA OF STUDENTS GIVING BACK IS NOT NEW

In the year 1970, Duquesne University was in some serious financial trouble. The students were given an ultimatum: either find a way to fund the University’s expenses or the University would have to close its doors. Through a massive wave of donor support, Duquesne University was able to continue reaching new heights as an academic institution. Plus, tons of other colleges and universities implement a student philanthropy program, constantly educating their campus communities on the importance of giving back.

WHAT DOES ‘PASS THE HAT’ MEAN?

The infamous Duquesne Duke hat is a symbol for gratitude, philanthropy, and pride for Duquesne. “Passing the Hat” is two-fold: you are saying thank you to your University for all your opportunities and experiences and then paying it forward with your senior gift to ensure all the things you love about Duquesne continue to thrive.

BY PASSING THE HAT, YOU ARE...

  • Believing in the Duquesne experience.
  • Leaving a lasting legacy.
  • Grateful for all the opportunities, experiences, and relationships made inside and outside the classroom.
  • Involved in the overall philanthropic impact of the University.
  • Invested in the value of your degree.
  • Enabling current and future students the opportunity to enjoy the same (or better!) education and experiences you have had.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH EACH DONATION?

You decide! That's right. You have the freedom to designate how your gift will be used among the following areas: University’s Area of Greatest Need, Your Academic School, Campus Ministry, Athletics, Greek Organizations, Gumberg Library, Student Scholarships, or OTHER

STILL NOT SOLD?

Look, we get it. You just spent 4 years pouring buckets of money into your tuition, room and board, books, and other living expenses.

Think of it this way: Duquesne is more than classes, exams, and deadlines. The beauty of Academic Walk; the first-class exercise facilities of the Power Center; the residence halls where you made your lifelong friends; the unforgettable study abroad experiences; the job fair that landed you your first internship; the scholarships that allow you and your peers to continue this academic journey. These and many more are the spirit of Duquesne University. Without the help of generous donations from alumni, family, friends, and students, all that we know our Bluff to be would cease to exist.
