Migrant Farmworker Mission Experience: Immokalee

Enrich the experience of Duquesne University students who will spend spring break helping and working alongside migrant farmworkers in Immokalee, FL!

Why are we spending our spring break to help the people of Immokalee, FL?

If you have had a tomato in the winter, it probably came from town called Immokalee in Florida. While the town is less than 50 miles from Naples, Florida, which is one of the richest cities in the state, Immokalee is one of the smallest and poorest towns, where the area is eight square miles and 40% of the population live below the poverty line. Farmworkers in Immokalee picked 32 lb buckets of these winter tomatoes for only $.50/bucket.

Who are we?

We are ten Duquesne University students participating in the Spiritan Campus Ministry Cross-Cultural Mission Experience. In March 2016, we will be traveling to Immokalee, Florida in order to perpetuate Duquesne’s mission of service by working with the Coalition of Immokalee Farm Workers (CIW). This once-in-a-lifetime experience will allow us to put Duquesne's mission in action.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers is a human rights organization advocating social responsibility and ending human trafficking and gender-based violence at work. One of their major campaigns is the Campaign for Fair Food to educate consumers about farm labor exploitation and ensure fair labor practices in Florida’s tomato fields and beyond.

Duquesne University has a long-standing partnership with the CIW (28 years), which works diligently to secure better wages and working conditions for migrant farm workers. Specifically, the CIW has successfully committed corporations like Walmart, McDonald’s, and Subway to fair food practices.

What will your donation support?

All of the funds donated to our mission trip will go directly to the organizations and causes we’re working with in Immokalee. We will be supporting projects like building a fence for the Amigos en Cristo community center and church and organize artwork for the CIW’s social action efforts.
